New Movie on Awareness Can Help Stop Divorce
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) May 7, 2007
Marriage counseling expert Nancy Wasson, Ph.D. states that the long-term success of many marriages may largely depend on how the partners handle conflict within the relationship.
Wasson and her husband Lee Hefner have created a free short Internet video designed to help partners lessen the risk of an affair, marriage separation and eventual divorce resulting from repeated heated arguments in a relationship.
“Our movie Seasons of Love is intended to inspire and encourage people to have more self awareness in how they respond to their partner during conflict in a relationship,” says Dr. Wasson.
She continues by saying that viewers of the movie often have an “aha moment” when they realize that they have more power than they ever imagined before about charting the future of their relationship.
“The viewer response has been tremendous from all over the world from people who want a better relationship,” states Wasson. Seasons of Love may be viewed for free on the web site www.SeasonsOfLoveMovie.com.
“One of the most tragic eventual results when spouses fight again and again can be marriage separation or divorce,” says Dr. Wasson. “But if the couple learns some simple techniques, they can sometimes stop divorce and save the marriage even when they’ve had marital problems for some time.”
Wasson maintains that flaring tempers in a disagreement often trigger partners to say things to each other leading to an escalating spiral of conflict. And if the couple doesn’t know how to recover from the hurt feelings and smoldering resentment such arguments often produce, the long-term result may be a slippery slope to marriage counseling, marital separation, and finally divorce.
“But it doesn’t have to happen,” claims Wasson. “I hear upset spouses say, ‘He pushes my buttons and makes me lose my temper.’ But the truth is, no one else can ‘make’ you lose your temper. That is your choice.”
Dr. Wasson points out that there is a challenge as well as an opportunity when dealing with the conflict in a marriage. “Realize that between the stimulus of your partner’s critical remarks and your angry response, there’s a gap in which you can make a decision about how to respond.”
Dr. Wasson adds that watching the movie is an important first step in learning to minimize conflict during a disagreement with a spouse.
She says that subsequent steps include:
1. First clarify that you fully understand what’s going on by asking non-judgmental questions. Try to listen for the meaning and intent behind your partner’s words and actions instead of just focusing on the words. For example you might ask, “Did you really want to go to that party next week or did you just accept the invitation for us because you felt obligated to your friend?”
2. When it becomes evident that you and your partner disagree, ask yourself, “Would I rather be happy instead of being right in this case?” If you remember how much you value love and harmony in your relationship, you may decide to sometimes concede to your partner’s wishes, even if you would have taken a different approach.
3. If you find yourself feeling hot under the collar, first take ten deep breathes before you angrily respond to your mate. This will give you time to collect your thoughts and think of the big picture and how you want your relationship to be, not on how you’re feeling in that moment.
4. Finally, when you answer look for common ground that you both agree on before stating your objection, using a softening statement. You might say, “Honey, I know that it’s important to both of us to have a social life, but I really have to do some work at home that’s going to make it difficult for me to go to that party.”
Dr. Wasson concludes by saying, “One of the keys to having a great marriage is to remember what you really value in your relationship and to think twice before you respond with anger to your mate.”
Nancy Wasson, Ph.D., is the co-creator of Overcome Control Conflict with Your Spouse or Partner: What to Do if Your Mate Says You’re Too Controlling OR if You’re Tired of Being Controlled, available at www.ControllingSpouse.com.
She and her husband Lee Hefner also created the free movie Seasons of Love, available at www.SeasonsOfLoveMovie.com, which is designed to help couples develop more self awareness.
In addition, she is the co-author of Keep Your Marriage: What to Do When Your Spouse Says ‘I Don’t Love You Anymore!’ and offers a free weekly marriage advice newsletter at www.KeepYourMarriage.com.

Rehab Counselling Centre Releases Alcoholism Research to Raise Public Awareness
Luton, Bedfordshire (PRWEB) April 25, 2008
In an attempt to raise public awareness of the factors concerning alcoholism, UK Rehab Centre Group Trust the Process provide an insight into the world of alcohol addiction to help people understand the illness.
Alcoholism
Alcoholism is now widely regarded as a disease which affects people mentally, physically and spiritually. Many people enjoy drinking socially, and sometimes drink too much, but when their drinking habits become abnormal and they start to behave repeatedly out of character, there is a strong possibility that alcoholism is beginning to set in. Some people show some signs of dependency on alcohol but that does not necessarily mean that they are alcoholic; they drink more alcohol than the level that is regarded as safe, for example, but still function perfectly well and do not experience any mental and physical consequences of drinking above the recommended limits.
Alcoholism, however, becomes apparent when the individual begins to avoid life issues, when they are unable to control their drinking when most people normally do, and when their alcohol use affects their family life, their work, their friendships, their finances etc. Alcohol becomes the primary focus in life for the alcoholic, for some people much quicker than others, and it begins to have a very damaging effect on both the individual with the addiction and their relatives, friends, colleagues and community.
Alcohol addiction
Alcohol addiction is not something that people can simply ‘shake off’ and get on with their lives. It affects the individual and the people around them and often leads to many problems both for the addict and their families. Alcohol addiction has an effect on the user’s health, both physical and mental, and can often lead to the individual being unable to function on a day-to-day basis. Due to the social stigma that is attached to alcohol addiction, the user may well try to conceal the amount that they are consuming from other people, either whilst drinking alone or by concealing how much they are drinking whilst socialising with others.
There are many health problems associated with alcohol addiction as the human body is unable to cope with constant and heavy amounts of alcohol. In small doses alcohol is regarded as harmless, sometimes even beneficial (we have all heard of the ‘hot toddie’ which is supposed to work wonders for a cold and that red wine in small quantities is good for the heart). In large and continuous doses, however, alcohol can be very damaging to the organs of the body, and people suffering with alcohol addiction are without doubt putting themselves at risk of severe illness and hospitalisation.
Eventually the individual suffering from alcohol addiction will need intensive help if they are to overcome their problem. In addiction treatment clinics, usually the person suffering with alcohol addiction will experience fear at the thought of having to give up alcohol altogether. It requires the person to readjust to every life situation and relationship which once was managed, or mismanaged, by using alcohol as a mood-altering drug. Addition treatment clinics help people to stop drinking by providing medically supervised detoxification programmes, to wean them off alcohol, whilst providing intensive counselling to address the faulty cognitive processes which need to change in order to ensure the alcoholic stays stopped.
Alcohol Counselling
Alcohol counselling is a very effective way of helping an individual with their problem of addiction. Many counsellors have personal experience of addiction and therefore can offer both empathy and professional support to the sufferer with their illness. People who are in recovery from alcoholism are usually very eager to help other people who are suffering with the effects of their alcohol consumption, and some decide that they would like to train to a professional standard to enable themselves to do this in the workplace.
An ‘introduction to counselling’ course is normally the first place to begin an education in counselling. This may be followed by a certificate course, which gives a general ‘feel’ for counselling and involves the basic requirements expected of a counsellor, following the code of ethics provided by the counselling body. The next level of training is the Diploma in Counselling which is normally a two year course, during which the trainee will begin to see clients in a one-to-one setting. Usually these courses deliver training for generic counselling, and with this it is often possible for the trainee to find employment in the alcohol addiction field to help those in alcohol rehabilitation.
Specific addiction courses are available in the UK, but normally require that the counsellor has a diploma-level qualification should they wish to enrol. Individuals who hold the diploma in counselling have a choice to work in the addiction field or not, and should they wish to do so, their personal history of problematic drinking is very often equally as important as the academic qualification.

Kinaxis Salutes National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week and Supports the Colbeth Clinic
Chicago, IL and Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) May 6, 2008
Kinaxis Inc., today pays tribute to National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (May 4-10), as a proud supporter of the Colbeth Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic and recent sponsor of its annual Gala fundraising event.
Kinaxis was first introduced to the clinic, which is part of the Institute of Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine, through its CEO, Doug Colbeth. He and his wife Margaret established the clinic in 2000 with a mission to raise awareness, provide early diagnosis and offer effective treatments of biological brain disorders for inner city children. These diseases include; bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and autism.
As a supporter of this cause, Kinaxis contributions to the clinic have come from both corporate and employee donations. Most recently, Kinaxis was a sponsor of the 4th Annual Colbeth Clinic Gala fundraiser, where more than .25 million was raised in total through private gifts and ticket sales. The event’s keynote speaker was Dr. Bennett Leventhal, who works with the Colbeth Clinic and is an internationally renowned expert in the area of autism. In addition, the Gala honored Jim Ryan, the former State Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate as the first recipient of the Colbeth Clinic Changing Minds award. This award was given in recognition of his courage to share his personal story on how biological brain diseases have impacted his family.
In 2007, the Colbeth Clinic provided more than 16,000 patient visits. The clinic is unique in that world leading researchers work side by side with passionate clinicians to provide state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment. While the clinic primarily serves youth in the Chicago area, its research and lobbying activities have an impact that extends well beyond the city limits. For example, Colbeth Clinic experts have testified before Congress petitioning for healthcare parity of these diseases – to be consistent with healthcare coverage for other physical illnesses. Thanks to these and countless others in the field, there is active legislation in process to resolve the discrepancy of coverage given to brain disorders as compared to other physical inflictions.
Raising awareness and erasing the stigma associated with mental health disorders was, and continues to be one of the key objectives of the clinic.
“Like millions of teens, I personally experienced the quiet desperation of severe depression,” says Doug Colbeth. “Fortunately, I was able to get excellent treatment before something tragic happened. This is precisely what we want to provide to others, especially those who may not have the financial means or access to best-of-class mental health services. I believe we must come out of the shadows to share our personal experiences and let our stories resonate with those among us who are, or know of someone that is suffering. Erasing the stigma will increase funding for the cause, encourage additional talented people to enter the field, and most importantly, encourage patients to seek treatments earlier. Only when we acknowledge how common mental health disorders are, can we make real progress in the treatment of these diseases.”
Doug’s motivation to make a difference is shared by his corporate family at Kinaxis.
“Doug’s enthusiasm for this cause has been persuasive and compelling; and as a result, Kinaxis has come on board,” says Randy Littleson, vice president of marketing for Kinaxis. “His leadership not only as CEO, but through his involvement in the clinic has been an example to us all.”
